Negotiating Tips

  • Listen Closely-doing more listening than speaking can give you an edge or further insight on how to proceed. Do not hesitate to delay responding until you have formulated a plan.
  • Do your Homework-have as much data and supporting facts as possible so that you can back up your offer. It will also provide you with the much needed confidence to present your case.
  • Role Playing-try to step into the shoes of the other side to gain perspective and insight.
  • Be calm, assertive, and direct-keep focused on the result you hope to obtain while maintaining your composure yet assertively leading the way to the goal.
  • Vision-imagine or have the client imagine moving on and what that outcome would look like.
